Leaked report details government social media plans

A leaked government Information and Communications Technology report outlines plans to modernise the public sector recruitment ICT infrastructure and use more social media.

The document, leaked a few days before Facebook's announcement that it has reached the 350 million user base milestone, outlines plans for a greater use of social media and applications by public sector staff.

Shailey Minocha, senior lecturer in human-computer interaction at the Open University, said the controversy generated by the leaked report could be offset by the value that these technologies bring.

She added that the ground has already been laid for use of social networks and group wikis (editable web pages) by organisations such as IBM.

Ms Minocha also noted that the use of social media could work for larger organisations.

"Marks & Spencer has developed a social media strategy - a presence on Facebook, a presence on Twitter and, of course, a website," she said.
