Financial services staff 'are key to climate change fight'
Tackling climate change demands a globally coordinated response from both private and public sector staff, it has been suggested.
But a number of steps must first be taken and agreed internationally for these opportunities to be realised, explains Stuart Fraser, chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee at the City of London Corporation.
Speaking to the London newspaper City AM, Mr Fraser said that investment in clean technology and low-carbon alternatives are required now if people are to avoid greater problems for the future.
He added that the UK should be encouraged "to exploit London's status as a global hub for finance and capital raising" in order to finance climate change mitigation and in areas such as the carbon market.
Financial services staff can also play a vital role in delivering the capital and expertise needed to meet this challenge, Mr Fraser said, as highlighted by a report commissioned by the City of London, Delivering Copenhagen.
Mr Fraser's comments coincide with the United Nations Climate Change Conference currently taking place in Copenhagen, where policy makers from around the world have gathered to attempt to agree a means of reducing the global output of harmful carbon emissions.
