£340m boost for UK's "crown jewels" defence staff

Aerospace specialists have been commended by the government, which described them as the "crown jewels" of British manufacturing.

Lord Peter Mandelson praised the work of the UK's defence staff as he announced £340 million of repayable investment would go into Airbus.

The business secretary suggested it will safeguard employment in high-skilled jobs in the industry.

"Aerospace is a sector that we are rightly proud of in the UK. It stimulates innovation across industry, demonstrates our capability to work with the most advanced technologies," he remarked.

The cash will go towards creating and sustaining 5,000 supply-chain jobs and 1,200 positions at its Filton and Broughton bases.

Primarily, this will facilitate further works on the A350 XWB aircraft, in particular on its wings and overall weight.

President and chief executive officer at Airbus Tom Enders hailed the plane, stating it is the most advanced and environmentally-friendly craft in its sector.

In related news, the Ministry of Defence recently awarded a £231 million contract to General Dynamics UK in order to upgrade its Bowman technology.
