Ministry of Defence spends £309m on "state-of-the-art" warship

Defence staff at BVT Service Fleet are to maintain the Ministry of Defence's (MoD) "state-of-the-art" new warships, it has been announced.

Some £309 million is to be ploughed into the contract, which will see specialists work on the Type 45 class destroyer's technologically-advanced propulsion systems.

The deal begins in January 2010 will cover seven years, with workers charged with delivering support in areas such as its weaponry and crew quarters.

Announcing the investment, minister for defence equipment and support Quentin Davies praised the firm's "in-depth" knowledge and expertise.

"[Type 45 provides] a multi-role asset combining state of the art power and propulsion systems, a world class weapons system and modern accommodation for its crew," he said.

Chief executive of BVT Alan Johnston hailed the cash injection as an "innovative approach" to problem solving within the Navy.

In related news, the MoD recently unveiled plans for a £35 million deal with its French counterparts to develop a new weapon.
