New PS3 release has 'boosted sales hugely'
Sony is eagerly anticipating a huge boost in sales of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) console after digital media developers in the island nation released the long-awaited follow-up to a classic role-playing game series.
Final Fantasy XIII is the latest addition much-loved franchise which sealed its popularity back in the mid-1990s when Final Fantasy VII was launched on its grandfather console, the original Sony Playstation.
And it is not as if that interest has waned well over a decade afterwards, with digital media specialists at its creator Square Enix predicting sales of over two million, making it the first title on the console to sell in excess of one million copies domestically.
Around 1.8 million copies have been initially shipped to stores to coincide with the launch date of December 17th, though more are currently being created to match post-Christmas demand, while the US and European release date is set for March 9th 2010.
The PS3 has had a tough time when matching sales of its competitors; the Nintendo Wii still continues to be Japan's best-selling console, while Microsoft's Xbox 360 has the second-largest share of the market.
