Government ploughs up to £2.3bn into new car technology

The government said it will press ahead with investment in "cutting-edge technology" in the car manufacturing industry.

Further details of its Automotive Assistance Programme have been announced, which could cost up to £2.3 billion and is geared towards sustaining jobs and creating the further recruitment of engineering staff.

Business minister Ian Lucas underlined the importance Westminster officials have placed on the scheme, stating there are both short and long-term plans to plough cash into the sector.

He said: "These are tough times for the car industry and because it is one of the key sectors of our economy we must support it now and in the future."

Mr Lucas added the country's leaders would also continue their backing for low-carbon technology, while also injecting £250 million of public money into "consumer incentives" to purchase environmentally-friendly models.

He was making his comments following news of £10 million of government investment in electric cars.

Tata Motors' European Technical Centre is the recipient of the loan, which it will add to its own £25 million fund for the project.
