"We filled the vacancy the next day"

Openreach's new broadband technology is "positive move"

A commentator has said Openreach's latest fixed-line development could be positive news for those struggling to gain access to fast connections.

Editor of broadband.co.uk Edd Dawson explained the innovation, designed by the firm's infrastructure specialists, is based on symmetric digital subscriber line technology which is normally used for businesses.

However, he questioned the long-term funding prospects for the project, stating there are issues with regard to its future.

"The big question really is going to be [that] this may prove that it works for the retail market, but who's going to pick up the bill in the long run?" Mr Dawson said.

He added it could be a solid choice for those unable to use a mobile or satellite system.

Openreach has explained the Broadband Enabling Technology (BET) is aimed at eradicating "not spots", where internet services are difficult to arrange.

BET is able to carry a connection 12 km from an exchange, which is seven km more than most current innovations.

The firm recently carried out trials in Scotland, which it said yielded positive results.
