New smartphone hails 'the death of the main menu'

By Jessica Jenkins

A new smartphone has been launched, designed around the principle that users can do anything with just one thumb, applications recruitment specialists may be interested to hear.

The First Else is hailed by its makers Else Ltd as signalling "the death of the main menu" through a "touch, slide and release" method of navigating apps and content, reports Basheera Khan for the Daily Telegraph.

Ms Khan praises the sleekness of the device, the elegance of integrating information across all applications and the neatness of the menu structure, which brings applications to the front and centre of the screen, slightly magnified, using a 'fish-eye' approach.

"Scrolling down your contacts list and having to re-orient your point of focus to find the one you want is a thing of the past," she said.

The Linux-based device, launched in London on November 24th and commercially available in 2010, also has the ability to record and play back calls on the go.

Brian Turner, executive editor of MobileWire.co.uk, has noted how smartphones have changed the mobile phone market.

"Consumers no longer want a mobile phone," he said. "They want a mobile computing device with full multimedia functionality."ADNFCR-2165-ID-19477581-ADNFCR
