Nokia financial services innovation 'has long-term growth potential'
There is "long-term growth potential" for a new financial service system developed by Nokia staff, the manufacturer has said.
According to the Finnish firm, Nokia Money will enable its customers to complete transactions using their phone number. It will allow cash transfers, bill payments and sim top-ups.
It claimed there are four billion handsets in the world, but "only" 1.6 bank accounts, meaning there is a gap in the market for a mobile solution.
Executive vice-president and chief development officer at the firm Mary McDowell remarked: "Global demand for access to financial services presents a strong opportunity to combine mobile devices with simple but powerful financial services such as Nokia Money."
Her colleague Teppo Paavola, who is vice-president and head of corporate business development at the organisation, added it could particularly benefit customers in countryside areas who can have restricted access to monetary services.
Earlier this month, Nokia unveiled its new notebook - the Booklet 3F - which it said blends the power of a PC with the benefits of mobility.
