Apple's iPad 'an important step in the transition towards digital books'

After a long wait, Apple's iPad has been welcomed by publishers and digital media staff alike as an "important step" in the transition towards digital books.

As Bookseller.com reports, Penguin chief executive John Makinson said the product, which was finally unveiled yesterday (January 27th), represented "an important step in the development of a digital audience for books".

In addition, the New York Times has already announced a dedicated iPad app to bring the "essence" of a newspaper to the new device.

Launching the iPad alongside its iBook Store, Apple chief Steve Jobs said he wanted the product to "go a bit further" than Amazon.com's Kindle.

According to PC Pro, the device is larger than expected, with a 9.7 inch multi-touch screen that is closer in size to a laptop.

The LED-backlit screen uses IPS technology, which will give a 178-degree viewing angle and better colour accuracy than traditional TN technology.

However, despite these innovations, PC Pro reckons reading a book via the iPad will not be as pleasant as on the Kindle and Sony readers because Apple's choice of IPS screen "is not as easy on the eye".
