Facebook privacy changes 'will set standard for the industry'

Facebook's digital media developers are to begin work "immediately" on changes to its privacy policy following negotiations with officials in Canada.

The social network portal said its new rules, devised after discussions with the north American country's office of the privacy commissioner (OPC), would "set a new standard for the industry".

OPC made numerous recommendations during the summits and has apparently agreed with the changes the California firm is to implement.

As part of the alterations, Facebook's user policies will be updated to give more detail on the practices involved in data storage, while members of the portal will be able to take better control of what portions of their account are available and where.

The applications section of the platform is set for an overhaul, with a new permissions model put in place.

Announcing the move, vice-president of global communications and public policy at Facebook Elliot Schrage said: "Our productive and constructive dialogue with the Commissioner's Office has given us an opportunity to improve our policies and practices in a way that will provide even greater transparency and control."

In related news, advertising networking provider Alvenda recently noted the growing use of Facebook for e-commerce operations, stating it can be a useful tool for retail as it is a "party people do not leave".
