Notebook sales drives PC graphics market to record levels

The PC graphics market has grown by a record 21 per cent over the past year, a new report has revealed, with much of its growth driven by notebook shipments.

Shipments of graphics processors jumped by 21.2 per cent, setting a record for the highest quarter-on-quarter growth in nine years.

A total of 119.45 million units were shipped in Q3, exceeding the 111 million units that were shipped in Q3 2008. Notebook shipments led the market, topping out at almost 56 million units.

Daniel McDonald, a business manager for netbooks/notebooks at Misco.co.uk, leading online provider of IT products and services to private and public sector recruitment, said demand for the devices predominantly came from education.

"We've been doing some very large deals in the public sector on netbooks," he added.

In fact, Mr McDonald hazards that demand may be so high that sellers will have to lock-in their inventories in the run up to Christmas.

"Certainly with some of the conversations we've had with the major manufacturers over the last few months, we're finding we have to secure stock as quickly as we can, to make sure we have a product to sell to our customers," he added.
