Mobile networks will be 'hot topic' for infrastructure staff in 2010

Mobile network infrastructure was an unlikely consumer 'hot topic' in 2009, largely due to the boom in the smartphone market, and according to the Financial Times it is set to become even bigger news in 2010.

Competition between mobile operators will be hotting up in the new year, reports Andrew Parker.

"There will be a period, as data really takes off, where network experience is a potential differentiator," agreed Ronan Dunne, head of O2.

O2's network failure in London last summer - a result of over-saturation by data-hungry smartphones - was a large talking point between both smartphone users and infrastructure specialists.

However, Mr Dunne emphasised that O2 was not alone in having network difficulties because of the fast-growing popularity of smartphones, particularly the Apple iPhone.

Smartphone volumes represented 14 per cent of total mobile devices sales in 2009 growing to 38 per cent by 2013, according to recent data published by Gartner.
