UK 'perfect site for new wind energy technology'

Engineering recruits, specifically those with capabilities in green technologies, could be in demand in the coming years if one expert's comments are to be believed.

Advisory organisation British Eco Energy said the UK is one of the best potential sites for wind turbines in Europe and could "lead the way" in rolling out the developments needed.

Helena Wright, who is concerned with renewable energy issues at the body, remarked: "Wind could really be our strong point.

"It's really great that the government is getting behind this and allowing these schemes to go ahead."

However, Ms Wright believes the UK is still lagging behind Germany, where 200,000 people work in the sector.

She was commenting as the Department of Energy and Climate Change and Ofgem opened the tendering process for £15 billion worth of cabling to connect wind farms.

This area of the eco economy has the potential to create 70,000 jobs and generate £8 billion in revenue, they stated.

An extra 25GW of new electricity generation capacity could also be produced if the rollout is successful.
