Yahoo and Microsoft to create "healthy competitor" for Google

A new deal between Microsoft and Yahoo will create healthy competition in the web technology arena, it has been stated.

The firms are pooling digital media staff resources to take on Google, noting that the fact it has 70 per cent of all search engine traffic makes the industry lopsided.

Under the deal, the California firm will become the sales force for advertisers linked to both organisations, with the Bill Gates-founded company sharing its search expertise the other way.

Announcing the move, Yahoo chief executive officer Carol Bartz said it will "keep everyone on their toes".

"With Microsoft powering Yahoo Search, we'll be able to focus on the things we do best - being the centre of people's lives online," she remarked.

In related news, Computer Weekly claimed the future release of Google's Chrome operating system is likely to hit Microsoft, which produces a similar product.

Journalist Glynn Moody described the move as an "invasion of its desktop heartland".ADNFCR-2165-ID-19287713-ADNFCR
