Best Buy to hire 8,000 in the UK

US consumer electronics giant Best Buy has begun a recruitment drive to create 8,000 jobs in the UK over the next five years, project managerswill be interested to know.

In partnership with Carphone Warehouse, Best Buy is launching an assault on the UK consumer electronics market.

The first superstores will open in Thurrock and Southampton next spring - two of hundreds of megastores to be rolled out across Europe, with each expected to employ around 100 people.

Best Buy said it had begun the search for recruits with a nine-week academy programme, where staff will receive training on the latest technology.

Carphone Warehouse sold 50 per cent of its retail business to Best Buy for £1.1 billion in 2008 as part of a plan to join forces and expand across the UK and Europe, with a new larger format of stores.

Best Buy, which sells a range of electronic goods from televisions and digital cameras to computer software, employs 150,000 people and has been keen to tap into the European sector and challenge the likes of Currys owner DSG International.

It is thought that up to 70 megastores could be opened on these shores within five years.
