Internet users will decide 'how fast UK gets superfast broadband'

Internet users, applications recruitment specialists and the government will decide how quickly the UK gets superfast broadband, according to communications industry regulator Ofcom.

Stuart McIntosh, a partner at Ofcom, said that while there were varying views on the pace the UK should move towards NGA (Next Generation Access) and superfast broadband, ultimately it was an issue for consumers, internet service providers and the government.

Speaking at the Westminster eForum keynote seminar the Future of Broadband in the UK, Mr McIntosh described the emergence of superfast broadband as "potentially a world changing issue" which could have "a dramatic effect on both our personal lives and our economic lives".

He added that the regulation and competition around next-generation broadband would be different from first generation because of the "uncertainties at this stage in the markets evolution".

However, he said that Ofcom is "committed to doing what we can to remove barriers to investment".

Other topics discussed at the seminar included whether the UK government should subsidise high-speed access that currently has no guaranteed market or clearly defined use.
