Benefits Officer

I am working with a council based in Surrey seeking a Benefits officer to assess all aspects of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support assessments including new claims, DHPs and appeals.

The successful candidate will have sound knowledge and proven experience of having assessed Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims within the last 12 months, along with a strong understanding of the evolving landscape of Housing Benefit with regard to welfare reform, Universal Credit and supported and temporary accommodation.

You will have extensive experience of using benefits software, preferably Academy systems, as well as experience of using a document management system.

The role:

Review procedures and keeps up to date with changes to relevant benefit legislation.

Assess entitlement to Housing Benefit and Council Tax

Support in line with regulations and local practices.

Provide statements of reasons, reconsiderations and drafts appeal submissions.

Classify overpayments and instigates housing benefit recovery action where appropriate.

Make appropriate referral of cases to others within the section such as complex issues to the Benefit Team Leader.

Identify suitable cases for take-up of Discretionary Housing

Payments and the Discretionary Hardship fund and processes the applications in a timely manner.

Identify potentially fraudulent claims and makes referrals

Signposts customers to the correct department or agency that can assist with their needs, for example the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, the local Foodbank.

Rate: £23 ph umbrella

Contract length: 5 months with possibility of extension

Week 1 is a series of remote sessions to learn all things systems, followed by a 1 week academy process which is a mixture of classroom and deskside this will be in one of our UK offices and usually consists of 3-8 other consultants all starting their journey together.

Experienced Modules:
These are a variety of sessions curated by us designed to support consultants as they are progressing through the career ladder, the aim is to ensure consultants at all levels have access to L&D.

Junior Management Programme:
Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
