Freelance Commissioning Manager - Waste-to-Energy Plant

Location: Frankfurt, Germany

About the Role

We are hiring an experienced Commissioning Manager to lead commissioning efforts on a waste-to-energy (WtE) power plant project in Frankfurt. This freelance position is ideal for a hands-on professional with deep experience in energy-from-waste, thermal generation, or industrial power facilities.

You will be responsible for overseeing commissioning from planning to handover, ensuring the plant meets performance, safety, and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate mechanical, electrical, and I&C commissioning activities across all plant systems, including turbines, boilers, fuel feed, and flue gas treatment.
  • Develop detailed commissioning schedules, procedures, and documentation aligned with project milestones.
  • Supervise testing, inspections, and functional checks on critical systems (steam generation, emissions control, electrical distribution).
  • Manage and interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, and specialist subcontractors.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during pre-commissioning and live commissioning phases.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE regulations, environmental permits, and performance guarantees.
  • Report on commissioning status and KPIs to the project management team.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of managerial experience in commissioning, ideally in waste-to-energy or power generation.
  • Strong understanding of thermal processes, high-pressure steam systems, emissions control, and plant utilities.
  • Fluent in German and English (written and spoken).
  • Proven ability to manage teams, enforce quality and safety standards, and deliver to tight deadlines.
  • Immediate availability.
  • Valid EU work authorization (no visa sponsorship available).
