Freelance Project Engineer (Civil / Geotechnical) - Kassel, Germany

Initial 12-Month Contract | Project Completion 2027

A leading international specialist in complex infrastructure and tunneling projects, is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join our team in Kassel, Germany. This is a freelance contract role with an initial 12-month term and the potential for extension until the project's completion in 2027.

About the Role:

As Project Engineer, you will support the delivery of a major tunneling project involving microtunneling and horizontal ground excavation (HGE). You will act as a key link between the design office, local site teams, and contractors, applying your civil and geotechnical expertise to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality project execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate between the design team, local site teams, and contractors.
  • Support technical processing of tunneling and excavation works in compliance with standards and project requirements.
  • Perform and review geotechnical calculations and analyses related to HGE and microtunneling.
  • Contribute to the preparation of drawings, BIM models, method statements, and technical documentation.
  • Oversee and monitor microtunneling operations, including ground behavior, settlement, and jacking forces.
  • Conduct construction site inspections, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance.
  • Prepare technical reports, meeting minutes, and cost estimations.
  • Participate in project meetings with clients and stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (geotechnical focus desirable).
  • Proven experience in tunneling, microtunneling, or trenchless construction methods.
  • Knowledge of HGE (Horizontal Ground Excavation) and soil/rock interaction.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with relevant software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, PLAXIS, or similar).
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and reporting abilities.
  • Fluency in English; German language skills are an advantage.
  • Ability to work on-site in Kassel, Germany on a freelance basis.
