We are working with a leading engineering company specializing in maritime, offshore, dredging, yachting, and industrial electrical and automation solutions. Our projects often combine advanced technology with precision engineering to meet complex client needs.
Following the award of a large automation project starting in Q1 of next year, they are expanding our team and seeking experienced freelance engineers to support its design, implementation, and commissioning.
Location: Netherlands (Hybrid: Head Office in Sliedrecht & Yard in Amsterdam, with remote work potential and on-site project visits)
Contract: 12-month freelance, with potential for extension
Department: Electrical & Automation Systems
We are looking for a Senior Automation Engineer (Freelance, Hybrid/Remote) to join our Electrical & Automation Systems team on an initial 12-month contract. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and commissioning automation and control systems for maritime, offshore, and industrial projects, with a focus on Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Marine Control Systems (MCS).
This role combines technical expertise, project delivery, and collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams. The project’s size will require additional team members, offering a dynamic and fast-paced work environment. You will have a flexible working arrangement, combining time in the head office in Sliedrecht, yard in Amsterdam, on-site project visits, and remote work where appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and specify automation and control systems, including:
- Energy Management Systems (EMS) for power generation, distribution, and optimization
- Marine Control Systems (MCS) for vessel propulsion, thrusters, and integrated ship operations
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and PLC-based automation
- Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and operator control panels
- Alarm and monitoring systems
- Develop and program control software for EMS, MCS, PLC, and DCS systems.
- Oversee integration, testing, and commissioning of automation systems on vessels and industrial installations.
- Collaborate with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure project success.
- Produce technical documentation: wiring diagrams, control logic, functional specifications, and user manuals.
- Ensure compliance with maritime and electrical safety standards, as well as classification society regulations.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers where relevant.
- Support maintenance, retrofits, and system upgrades during the project lifecycle.
- Work in a flexible arrangement, balancing time between Sliedrecht head office, Amsterdam yard, remote work, and on-site project visits.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in automation engineering, preferably in maritime, offshore, or industrial projects.
- Strong knowledge of EMS and MCS systems, PLCs, DCS, and HMIs.
- Experience with control logic design, wiring diagrams, schematics, and documentation.
- Familiarity with maritime standards, classification societies, and safety regulations.
- Excellent project management, coordination, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team on fast-paced projects.
- Comfortable with a flexible hybrid/remote working arrangement.
- Fluent in English; Dutch language skills are a plus.
What We Offer
- Initial 12-month freelance contract with potential for extension based on project success.
- Flexible work arrangement: hybrid between Sliedrecht office, Amsterdam yard, remote work, and on-site project engagement.
- Participation in a large-scale, high-profile automation project starting in Q1.
- Collaborative, innovative, and technically challenging environment.
- Opportunities for leadership and mentoring within the project team.
- Hands-on experience with cutting-edge EMS and MCS systems in maritime and industrial applications.
