Freelance Project Manager – BESS / Substation Projects (German Speaking)

 

Location: Vienna, Austria

Contract: Freelance | 12-month contract

Rate: TBC

 

We are currently supporting a major energy infrastructure programme and are looking for an experienced Project Manager to support the delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and substation projects based in Vienna.

This is a freelance position suited to a technically strong PM with a background in electrical engineering and hands-on experience managing complex energy projects.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • End-to-end project management of BESS and substation projects from design through commissioning
  • Coordination of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities
  • Management of project schedules, budgets, and risk registers
  • Acting as the key interface between contractors, suppliers, grid operators, and local stakeholders
  • Ensuring compliance with Austrian regulations, grid codes, and HSE standards
  • Reporting project progress, milestones, and issues to senior stakeholders
  • Supporting site activities and resolving technical or delivery challenges as required

Required Experience & Skills

  • Proven Project Management experience in energy or power infrastructure projects
  • Electrical Engineering background (degree or equivalent experience)
  • Demonstrable experience delivering BESS projects (utility-scale preferred)
  • Experience with substations, grid connection, or high-voltage systems
  • Strong understanding of construction and commissioning phases
  • Fluent German (spoken and written) is essential
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a freelance/contract environment
