Role Overview
The Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer will play a key role in the design, installation, integration, and commissioning of a large scale renewable energy project incorporating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). You will ensure that all electrical and instrumentation systems are engineered to the highest technical, safety, and regulatory standards, supporting the project’s mission to deliver reliable, sustainable energy infrastructure in the Antwerp region.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical
- Develop and review electrical designs for LV/MV distribution, switchgear, transformers, and protection systems
- Support integration of BESS components including PCS, inverters, battery racks, HVAC, and fire suppression systems
- Perform load flow, short‑circuit, and protection coordination studies
- Ensure compliance with Belgian AREI/REG regulations and IEC standards
- Prepare technical specifications, single‑line diagrams, cable schedules, and installation drawings
- Oversee electrical installation activities and ensure quality control on site
Instrumentation
- Design and specify instrumentation for monitoring, control, and safety systems (temperature, pressure, gas detection, etc.)
- Support SCADA/PLC integration for BESS monitoring and control
- Develop I/O lists, loop diagrams, and instrumentation datasheets
- Ensure proper calibration, testing, and commissioning of instrumentation devices
- Coordinate with automation engineers for system integration and FAT/SAT activities
Project Execution & Coordination
- Collaborate with EPC contractors, suppliers, and internal engineering teams
- Participate in HAZOP, design reviews, and risk assessments
- Provide technical support during procurement, vendor selection, and equipment evaluation
- Conduct site inspections, troubleshoot issues, and support commissioning and handover
- Prepare progress reports, documentation, and as‑built records
Technical Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of LV/MV electrical systems, protection, grounding, and cable sizing
- Experience with BESS technologies (inverters, PCS, EMS, battery modules)
- Familiarity with renewable energy systems (solar, wind, grid‑connected assets)
- Proficiency with instrumentation design and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP)
- Experience with SCADA/PLC systems and integration
- Understanding of Belgian and EU electrical standards (AREI/REG, IEC)
- Competence with engineering tools (EPLAN, AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar)
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electromechanical Engineering
- Additional certifications (VCA, ATEX, AREI, or similar) are strong assets
