Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Freelance Shielding Technician / Engineer to support on-site nuclear operations in Belgium. This is a blue-collar, field-based role involving the physical handling, transport, and installation of shielding materials (including lead components) within controlled areas of a nuclear power plant.
The role requires strict adherence to radiation protection and safety procedures, as well as valid nuclear site certifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport, handle, and position shielding materials (including lead blocks, lead wool, and shielding containers) within the plant.
- Install and dismantle temporary and permanent radiation shielding as required during maintenance, outages, and operational activities.
- Assist in radiation protection measures to minimize exposure in line with ALARA principles.
- Work in controlled and supervised radiation areas, following all safety protocols.
- Support radiation protection teams with shielding setup and adjustments.
- Conduct basic radiation monitoring support tasks as directed.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and compliance with site safety procedures at all times.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
Mandatory Requirements
- Proven experience working in nuclear power plants or high-radiation industrial environments.
- Valid NVC Training (Nuclear Safety Certification).
- Valid Radiation Protection Passport (required for access to controlled areas).
- Belgian Reliability Check / Security Clearance (or eligibility to obtain it).
- Experience handling heavy materials (especially lead shielding).
- Physically fit and capable of manual handling tasks.
- Strong understanding of radiation safety practices.
- Ability to follow strict procedures and work under supervision.
- Basic communication skills in English (French or Dutch is a plus).
Preferred Experience
- Previous outage or maintenance project experience in nuclear facilities.
- Experience working alongside radiation protection teams.
- Familiarity with controlled area entry/exit procedures and contamination control.
Working Conditions
- On-site role within controlled and potentially high-radiation areas.
- Shift work, weekend work, and overtime may be required during outages.
- Physically demanding tasks including lifting, carrying, and positioning heavy shielding materials.
