Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Freelance Contract

(Infrastructure, Complex Structures & Construction Projects – Netherlands)

Overview

A leading Dutch geotechnical consultancy is looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to support ongoing and upcoming projects across infrastructure, foundations, high‑rise structures, and complex ground‑engineering works. The team is known for connecting strong theoretical knowledge with practical construction‑site understanding, working on projects ranging from high‑rise towers to quay walls, viaducts, and specialized foundation systems.

This role is geared toward a technically strong, calculation‑driven engineer who enjoys being involved in both design and direct project interaction.

Geotechnical Design & Analysis

  • Perform advanced geotechnical calculations for foundations, deep excavations, settlement behavior, and soil‑structure interaction.
  • Contribute to design work on major civil structures such as quay walls, viaducts, and high‑rise foundations.
  • Deliver design input for complex foundation systems, including piled foundations and deep soil layers, often used in high‑rise construction.
  • Conduct geotechnical risk assessments and provide technical recommendations throughout the project lifecycle.

Software & Modelling

  • Use PLAXIS 2D/3D and Deltares D‑Series to model geotechnical scenarios.
  • Build and validate models for settlement, stability, groundwater interaction, and deformation behaviour.

Client Interaction & Coordination

  • Work closely with contractors, project managers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams at the office 4 days per week.
  • Participate in technical meetings and support real‑time project decision‑making.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Guide and support junior and graduate geotechnical engineers.
  • Review their technical work and help develop internal best practices.

Profile Requirements

  • Strong background in geotechnical engineering with a calculation‑heavy focus.
  • Proficiency with PLAXIS 2D/3D and Deltares D‑Series.
  • Experience designing foundations for infrastructure, high‑rise, or complex civil structures.
  • Comfortable in client-facing situations; able to translate technical outputs into clear guidance.
  • Prior experience with projects such as quay walls, viaducts, high‑rise foundations, deep soil layers, or settlement-critical structures is highly valued.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to mentor junior engineers.
  • Based in or able to work regularly in the Netherlands (4 days/week onsite).

Week 1 is a series of remote sessions to learn all things systems, followed by a 1 week academy process which is a mixture of classroom and deskside this will be in one of our UK offices and usually consists of 3-8 other consultants all starting their journey together.

These are a variety of sessions curated by us designed to support consultants as they are progressing through the career ladder, the aim is to ensure consultants at all levels have access to L&D.

Junior Management Programme:
Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
