Senior Mechanical Installations Engineer – Long‑Term Freelance Contract (Netherlands)

About the Role

A leading international engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Installations Engineer (ZZP/Freelance) to support a portfolio of highly complex construction projects across the Netherlands. From high‑performance laboratories and hospitals to large‑scale high‑rise buildings and sustainable redevelopment projects, you will play a key role in shaping advanced mechanical installation designs.

In this role, you’ll lead the technical development of mechanical building systems from concept through detailed design. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams—architects, structural engineers, sustainability specialists, and digital engineering experts—while contributing to future‑ready, high‑quality engineering solutions.

This long‑term freelance assignment offers continuity, technical depth, and the opportunity to influence landmark projects in both Dutch and international markets.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of mechanical installation designs from VO through detailed engineering
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams to create integrated, high‑performing technical solutions
  • Contribute to mechanical concepts for complex buildings such as laboratories, hospitals, and high‑rise structures
  • Ensure engineering quality, structure, and consistency across all project stages
  • Review designs, guide improvements, and bring forward new technical ideas and innovations
  • Support design reviews, technical evaluations, and stakeholder meetings
  • Mentor and support junior engineers when needed
  • Work proactively and collaboratively—no siloed work

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in Dutch (essential) and solid communication skills
  • 4–8 years of relevant experience as a mechanical installations engineer
  • Proven experience with complex building types (labs, healthcare, high‑tech, high‑rise, or similar)
  • Skilled in BIM environments; experience with computational/digital engineering tools is a plus
  • Strong technical depth and a drive for innovation
  • Able to work in a structured, coordinated, and team‑oriented manner
  • Comfortable interfacing with clients and different internal disciplines
  • Available on a ZZP/freelance basis

Academy:
Week 1 is a series of remote sessions to learn all things systems, followed by a 1 week academy process which is a mixture of classroom and deskside this will be in one of our UK offices and usually consists of 3-8 other consultants all starting their journey together.

Experienced Modules:
These are a variety of sessions curated by us designed to support consultants as they are progressing through the career ladder, the aim is to ensure consultants at all levels have access to L&D.

Junior Management Programme:
Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
