Construction Manager · On-site

We are seeking an experienced Freelance Construction Manager to oversee on-site delivery of a data centre construction project in the Vienna area. The successful candidate will take responsibility for site management, programme delivery, subcontractor coordination, and quality compliance from mobilisation through to handover.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Project Director, you will be the senior construction presence on site, accountable for day-to-day delivery across all construction disciplines. You will manage subcontractors covering civil and structural works, MEP installation, and fit-out, ensuring the project is delivered on programme, within budget, and to the required quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on-site construction delivery across CSA and MEP workstreams on a mission-critical data centre build
  • Manage and coordinate subcontractor packages, ensuring works are sequenced effectively and trade interfaces are controlled
  • Own the site programme and drive performance against key milestones, flagging risks and implementing recovery measures where required
  • Chair site meetings with subcontractors, design teams, and the client
  • Enforce the project HSE plan and conduct regular site inspections
  • Maintain the quality management system on site, ensuring ITP compliance and sign-off documentation is in order
  • Liaise with local authorities and utility providers as required
  • Coordinate commissioning readiness activities with the MEP Manager and commissioning team
  • Produce regular progress reports for the Project Director and client

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in construction management on large-scale commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects
  • Experience managing multi-trade subcontractor environments on fast-track programmes
  • Working knowledge of Austrian or German building regulations; familiarity with ÖNORM or VOB an advantage but not essential
  • Good working knowledge of construction programming tools (MS Project or similar)
  • German language skills are beneficial but not a requirement; professional English essential
  • Valid EU work authorisation
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline preferred — equivalent site-based experience will be considered

Preferred Background

  • Prior exposure to data centre, mission-critical, pharma, or other high-specification construction environments
  • Experience working with Tier 1 or specialist contractors in DACH
  • Familiarity with MEP-heavy builds and construction interfaces with commissioning teams
