Senior Geotechnical Site Supervisor – Tunnelling
Location: Munich, Germany
Sector: Infrastructure & Underground Construction
About the Company
Our client is a fast‑growing engineering consultancy specialising in large‑scale infrastructure projects across Europe. With a strong reputation in underground works, transportation, and complex geotechnical environments, the business is expanding its presence on major tunnelling projects and is seeking an experienced professional to strengthen its on‑site delivery capability.
The Role
We are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Site Supervisor to support and oversee geotechnical activities on a major tunnel project in the Munich area. This is a senior, site‑based role requiring extensive tunnelling experience, strong leadership skills, and the ability to act as the key interface between designers, contractors, and the client.
You will be responsible for ensuring that geotechnical works are executed safely, in compliance with design intent, specifications, and relevant standards, while proactively managing ground risks and construction challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate all geotechnical aspects of tunnel construction, including excavation support, ground treatment, monitoring, and lining works
- Act as the primary geotechnical point of contact on site between the consultancy, contractor, and client
- Review and ensure compliance with geotechnical designs, method statements, and risk assessments
- Monitor ground conditions and interpret geotechnical data, recommending mitigation measures where required
- Oversee instrumentation and monitoring systems (e.g. convergence, settlement, pore pressure) and assess trends
- Provide technical input and on‑site decision‑making support during critical tunnelling activities
- Ensure adherence to German and international standards, safety regulations, and project specifications
- Contribute to site reporting, progress reviews, and technical documentation
- Support mentoring and guidance of junior site engineers and geotechnical staff
- Participate in design coordination meetings, HAZID/HAZOPs, and construction reviews
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Extensive experience (typically 8–10+ years) in geotechnical supervision on tunnelling or underground construction projects
- Proven hands‑on experience with tunnel construction methods (e.g. NATM, TBM, cut‑and‑cover, ground improvement)
- Strong understanding of soil and rock mechanics applied to tunnelling works
- Experience working in regulatory‑driven environments, ideally on German or Central European projects
- Fluent German (spoken and written) is essential; strong English skills are highly desirable
- Demonstrated ability to lead on‑site geotechnical activities and manage interfaces with multiple stakeholders
Personal Attributes
- Senior, confident site presence with strong problem‑solving skills
- Proactive, safety‑focused mindset with strong attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex geotechnical issues clearly
- Comfortable working in a fast‑paced site environment on complex infrastructure projects
