Freelance Quality Manager – Cable Production & Installation

Location: Dortmund or Hamburg, Germany (hybrid / site-based as required)

Contract: 12-month freelance contract

Start Date: ASAP (or flexible)

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Freelance Quality Manager to support a major cable production and installation programme in Germany. The Quality Manager will be responsible for overseeing quality assurance and quality control activities across engineering, cable manufacturing, and installation phases, ensuring compliance with project, contractual, and regulatory requirements.

This role requires strong technical knowledge of cabling systems, hands-on quality management experience, and the ability to work across multiple contractors and stakeholders in a complex project environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) activities for cable production and installation
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Project Quality Plan in line with contractual and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure compliance with:
  • Project specifications
  • Applicable standards (DIN, IEC, ISO, etc.)
  • Client and regulatory quality requirements
  • Oversee quality processes across:
  • Cable design and engineering
  • Cable manufacturing / production
  • Transport, handling, and storage
  • Installation and commissioning activities
  • Review and approve:
  • Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Manufacturing and installation procedures
  • Method statements and quality documentation
  • Coordinate and witness factory acceptance tests (FATs) and site acceptance tests (SATs)
  • Manage non-conformances (NCRs), corrective actions, and root cause analysis
  • Conduct audits and inspections at manufacturing facilities and installation sites
  • Provide quality input to technical queries, change management, and interface resolution
  • Prepare and maintain quality records, reports, and handover documentation
  • Act as the key quality point of contact for the client, contractors, and project teams

Required Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience as a Quality Manager, QA/QC Manager, or Quality Lead on complex engineering or infrastructure projects
  • Strong technical knowledge of cable systems, including:
  • Power cables (LV / MV / HV) and/or
  • Industrial or energy-sector cabling
  • Solid understanding of:
  • Cable manufacturing and production processes
  • Cable installation methods and site activities
  • Engineering or technical background (Electrical Engineering preferred)
  • Experience working with inspection regimes, testing, and certification
  • Strong knowledge of relevant standards (IEC, DIN, ISO 9001, project-specific specs)
  • Experience managing quality across multiple suppliers and contractors
  • Structured, detail-oriented approach with strong documentation skills
  • Confident communicator able to challenge and influence stakeholders
  • Experience working on projects in Germany; knowledge of local regulations and quality standards is a strong advantage

Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
