Head of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Location: North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany (Hybrid)
Overview
An established renewable energy developer is looking to appoint a Head of BESS to lead the development and scale-up of its energy storage platform across Germany.
This is a high-impact role with full ownership of strategy, pipeline, and execution, playing a central part in integrating storage into an existing solar portfolio and shaping the company’s next phase of growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and drive the BESS strategy and market approach
- Build and deliver a pipeline of standalone and co-located storage projects
- Lead key development activities including grid, permitting, and project structuring
- Own commercial strategy, including route-to-market and trading partnerships
- Set direction on technology, suppliers, and system design
- Support investment decisions and project financing
- Establish and lead a dedicated BESS function
Candidate Profile
- 10+ years’ experience across energy, with exposure to BESS or flexibility markets
- Background in project development, IPP, utility, or trading environments
- Strong grasp of storage economics, grid infrastructure, and energy markets
- Proven commercial capability: modelling, structuring, negotiation
- Comfortable operating at both strategic and hands-on levels
- Fluent English; German advantageous
Success Metrics
- Delivery of a scalable BESS pipeline (MW / MWh)
- Projects progressing to FID and execution
- Establishment of a commercially viable storage portfolio
