HVDC Control Engineer – Substation Automation
This role involves handling the design, configuration, testing, and commissioning of control and automation systems for HVDC converter stations and associated AC substations. It involves working on complex energy transmission projects that support grid stability throughout Germany.
This position sits at the interface between HVDC control, protection, SCADA, and substation automation, requiring close collaboration with system engineering, protection, commissioning, and customer teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement control and automation concepts for HVDC converter stations and connected substations
- Develop and configure station control, interlocking, and sequencing logic
- Engineer and configure substation automation systems according to IEC 61850 standards
- Interface HVDC control systems with SCADA, HMI, gateway, and dispatch systems
- Support integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems within HVDC substations
- Perform system testing, including FAT, SAT, and site commissioning
- Analyse and resolve control and automation issues during testing and operation
- Collaborate closely with HVDC system engineering, protection, and secondary engineering teams
- Prepare technical documentation, control specifications, test protocols, and reports
- Support upgrades, retrofits, and extensions of existing HVDC and substation automation systems
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field
- Experience with HVDC systems, power transmission, or large electrical substations
- Solid knowledge of substation automation architectures and IEC 61850
- Experience with control platforms such as PLC, PAC, or vendor-specific HVDC control systems
- Understanding of grid control, protection principles, and operational requirements
- Willingness to travel for factory tests and on-site commissioning in Germany and abroad
- Strong English skills, Strong German-language is also advantageous
Technical Skills:
- Experience with SCADA systems, RTUs, gateways, and HMIs
- Knowledge of station control systems from major OEMs (e.g. Siemens, Hitachi Energy, GE, ABB, Schneider)
- Familiarity with testing tools and simulation environments (e.g. RTDS, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink)
- Experience with redundancy concepts, cybersecurity, and grid operator interfaces
