PT1 Specialist (LST Planning) – Rail Signalling

 

Overview:

We are supporting a leading rail engineering environment in the search for an experienced PT1 Specialist (LST Planning) to join a high-performing signalling team. This role focuses on conceptual and system-level railway signalling design in line with Deutsche Bahn (DB) standards, specifically Ril 819.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced LST Planner or Rail Signalling Engineer who thrives in technical design, safety-critical logic, and structured planning environments.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creation and development of PT1 (Planteil 1) signalling plans
  • Design and specification of:
  • Signal layouts
  • Track and switch logic (Weichen)
  • Train routes (Fahrstraßen)
  • Preparation of key planning documentation including:
  • Signal tables
  • Route tables
  • Switch tables
  • Development of safe train movement logic and signalling system concepts
  • Review, validation, and optimisation of planning outputs

Coordination with:

  • Deutsche Bahn stakeholders
  • Internal engineering and project teams
  • PT2 (detailed design) teams

Technical Expertise Required:

  • Strong knowledge of Leit- und Sicherungstechnik (LST)
  • Proven experience with:
  • Signalling systems (Ks / H-V)
  • Interlocking systems (ESTW / DSTW)
  • Train control systems (ZL / ZN)
  • Block systems and railway safety principles
  • Level crossings ()
  • Basic understanding of ETCS is desirable

Standards & Planning Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience working with DB regulations (Ril 819)
  • Ability to produce manufacturer-independent PT1 planning concepts
  • Strong understanding of railway operational and safety requirements

Tools & Methods:

  • Experience using:
  • AutoCAD (essential)
  • Rail planning tools such as ProSig, ProVI (desirable)
  • Excel for signalling tables and logic documentation

Candidate Profile:

  • Background as an LST Planner / Rail Signalling Engineer
  • Experience within:
  • Railway infrastructure projects (ideally DB-related)
  • Engineering consultancies or rail technology organisations
  • Not aligned to purely civil or construction-based roles
  • Strong emphasis on:
  • Technical documentation
  • System logic
  • Design integrity

Desirable / Bonus Experience:

  • PSV (Prüfsachverständiger) or Planprüfer certification/experience
  • Ability to:
  • Review and approve PT1 plans
  • Ensure full compliance with DB standards
  • Act as a technical authority within signalling design

 

An experienced signalling professional with strong PT1 planning expertise, deep knowledge of DB standards and LST systems, and the ability to both develop and review signalling concepts.

Candidates with PSV or plan approval experience will be highly regarded.

Academy:
Week 1 is a series of remote sessions to learn all things systems, followed by a 1 week academy process which is a mixture of classroom and deskside this will be in one of our UK offices and usually consists of 3-8 other consultants all starting their journey together.

Experienced Modules:
These are a variety of sessions curated by us designed to support consultants as they are progressing through the career ladder, the aim is to ensure consultants at all levels have access to L&D.

Junior Management Programme:
Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
