AP Energy Marshall · On-Site
Location: Bedburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Contract: 18 months initial, with extensions available up to 3 years
Rate: 700 to 1,000 EUR per day, dependent on experience
Hours: 50 hours per week
Engagement type: Freelance / self-employed (Freiberuflich). EU right to work required.
Start: October 2026
The Role:
An end client is seeking an experienced Energy Marshal to take responsibility for electrical safety and switching control on a large-scale data centre project in Bedburg, NRW. This is a direct end client engagement, working as the client's electrical safety authority on site rather than through a contractor layer.
The Energy Marshal holds the authority over all live and potentially live electrical systems on site, controlling access, isolation and energisation as the facility progresses through construction, commissioning and into operational handover. The role carries genuine authority and the successful candidate will be expected to use it, including stopping work where safety standards are not met.
The project offers long-term visibility, with an initial 18 month term and extension options taking the engagement up to three years.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the client's designated electrical safety authority for all HV, MV and LV systems on site
- Own and operate the permit to work system, issuing, controlling and cancelling permits for all electrical work
- Plan, approve and supervise switching operations, producing and verifying switching programmes and schedules
- Control isolation, lock-off and proving procedures, ensuring safe systems of work are applied without exception
- Assess and authorise contractor electrical personnel, verifying competence and qualifications before granting working authority
- Maintain the register of authorised and competent persons on site
- Manage the boundary between construction and energised systems as areas are progressively energised, ensuring clear demarcation and controlled handover of areas
- Support the commissioning team through Level 3 to Level 5 activity, providing safe access to systems for functional and integrated systems testing
- Investigate electrical incidents and near misses, producing reports and driving corrective action
- Chair or contribute to electrical safety briefings, toolbox talks and coordination meetings with the general contractor and MEP subcontractors
- Ensure compliance with German electrical safety legislation and site EHS requirements, working alongside the site safety team and any appointed VEFK
- Maintain full documentation and traceability of all switching, isolation and permit activity to an auditable standard
Essential Requirements:
- Proven experience as an Energy Marshal, Senior Authorised Person, Authorised Person or equivalent electrical safety authority on data centre or comparable mission critical projects
- Strong working knowledge of HV, MV and LV distribution systems including switchgear, transformers, UPS, standby generation and busbar
- Demonstrable experience operating a permit to work system on a live or partially energised site
- Experience producing and verifying switching programmes
- Confident assessing and authorising third party electrical personnel
- Ability to hold the line on safety standards under commercial and programme pressure
- Relevant electrical qualification and current authorisation or the ability to be authorised on appointment
- Freelance status with the ability to invoice as a self-employed contractor
- EU right to work (no visa sponsorship available)
- Willingness to be site based in Bedburg for the duration of the contract, working 50 hours per week
Desirable:
- German language ability, advantageous but not a requirement for this position
- Previous delivery on a hyperscale data centre project in the DACH region
- Familiarity with German electrical standards and safe working practice (DIN VDE 0105-100, EN 50110, BetrSichV, DGUV V3)
- VEFK appointment or experience working alongside an appointed VEFK
- Experience of progressive energisation and area handover on a live construction site
