Electrical Commissioning Engineer (MV/LV Switchgear) · On-Site
Our client, a leading contractor delivering a hyperscale data centre campus in the Düsseldorf / NRW region, is looking for an experienced Electrical Commissioning Engineer. You will join the commissioning team responsible for bringing the facility's medium- and low-voltage power infrastructure safely from installation through to energisation and handover.
Location: Düsseldorf / North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Contract type: Freelance / Contract
Duration: [ 6-12 months, extensions likely]
Rate: Negotiable
Key responsibilities
- Plan and carry out Level 2-4 commissioning of MV switchgear (10/20 kV), transformers, LV main distribution boards (NSHV) and sub-distribution, working to the commissioning plan and client specifications
- Witness and verify Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for switchgear, transformers, busbar trunking and power distribution equipment
- Carry out and review pre-energisation checks: insulation resistance, contact resistance, protection relay settings and secondary injection, CT/VT testing, phase rotation and torque checks
- Coordinate energisation sequences and switching programmes with the electrical contractor, the DNO/grid operator and the site authorised person, in line with VDE 0105-100 and the site permit-to-work system
- Support functional testing of power paths including UPS, generator, ATS/STS and load bank testing ahead of Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
- Prepare, execute and close out test scripts, ITPs and commissioning checklists; log and track snags/deficiencies to closure
- Compile commissioning records and handover documentation (test certificates, as-built protection settings, O&M inputs)
- Work closely with the Commissioning Manager, Electrical Package Manager and QA/QC team to keep commissioning on programme
Requirements
- Degree or technical qualification in Electrical Engineering (Elektrotechnik) – Ingenieur, Techniker or Meister level
- Minimum 5 years' electrical commissioning experience, ideally including data centre, mission-critical, industrial or large infrastructure projects
- Hands-on experience with MV/LV switchgear from major OEMs, protection relays and power distribution systems
- Thorough knowledge of DIN VDE standards (incl. VDE 0100, VDE 0105-100) and safe switching practice; Elektrofachkraft status required, switching authorisation (Schaltberechtigung) for MV is a strong advantage
- Familiarity with test equipment (secondary injection sets, insulation testers, micro-ohmmeters, power quality analysers)
- Experience with commissioning management platforms and documentation (e.g. Procore, ACC, or similar) is beneficial
- Fluent German and good working English (B2 or above); the project team operates in both languages
- Valid SCC/SCCP (or equivalent) safety certificate is an advantage
What's on offer
- Long-term freelance engagement on a high-profile hyperscale data centre project, with strong likelihood of extension
- Competitive day / hourly rate, paid reliably via g2 Recruitment
- The chance to work with a well-established commissioning team on modern, high-capacity power infrastructure
- Access to further data centre projects across Germany through g2's Energy & Infrastructure network
