FREELANCE BESS Electrical Engineer

 

Location: UK (Multi-Site Travel Required)

Contract Length: Initial 12-Month Contract

Start Date: Q4 2026 (Potentially Earlier)

Rate: Competitive (DOE)

 

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced BESS Electrical Engineer to support the design, development, and delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across multiple sites in the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing renewable energy sector, working on innovative energy storage projects that play a critical role in the transition to a sustainable energy future.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce and review electrical designs for utility-scale BESS projects.
  • Carry out electrical simulations and system studies.
  • Develop and maintain engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Support project delivery from concept through to commissioning.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams, project managers, and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in technical discussions with clients and provide engineering expertise throughout project lifecycles.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant UK standards and industry regulations.
  • Provide technical support across multiple project sites as required.

Required Experience

  • Proven experience as an Electrical Engineer within the renewable energy, power generation, transmission & distribution, or energy storage sectors.
  • Strong understanding of electrical design principles and power systems.
  • Experience performing electrical calculations, simulations, and technical studies.
  • Proficiency in producing and reviewing electrical drawings and documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across the UK.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working on Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and construction/electrical projects.
  • Experience with grid connection and utility-scale renewable energy projects.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK electrical standards and regulations.
  • Experience using industry-standard electrical design and simulation software.

These are a variety of sessions curated by us designed to support consultants as they are progressing through the career ladder, the aim is to ensure consultants at all levels have access to L&D.

Junior Management Programme:
Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
