Job Title: HSE Lead Hyperscale Data Centre

Location: Berlin, Germany (On‑site / Hybrid)

Contract Type: Freelance / Contract

Duration: 24 months

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced HSE Lead to support the delivery of a large Hyperscale Data Centre project in Berlin. The HSE Lead will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and enforcing Health, Safety, and Environmental standards across the site, working closely with the client, main contractor, and subcontractors.

This is a senior, site‑focused role, requiring strong visibility on site, hands‑on leadership, and the ability to operate effectively within a complex, fast‑paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the HSE Lead for the project, representing the client’s HSE expectations on site
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Project HSE Management Plan in line with German regulations and client standards
  • Ensure full compliance with:
  • German HSE legislation
  • Project‑specific and client HSE requirements
  • Contractor and subcontractor safety systems
  • Lead and coordinate all HSE activities across multiple workstreams, including:
  • Civil and structural works
  • MEP installations
  • Fit‑out and commissioning phases
  • Conduct regular site inspections, safety walks, audits, and compliance checks
  • Review and approve:
  • Risk assessments (Gefährdungsbeurteilungen)
  • Method statements
  • Permit‑to‑work documentation
  • Monitor contractor performance, identify non‑conformances, and ensure timely corrective actions
  • Lead incident reporting, investigation, and root cause analysis
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and site inductions
  • Prepare and submit HSE reports, statistics, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to the client
  • Actively promote a strong safety culture across the project
  • Interface with local authorities, inspectors, and client representatives as required

Requirements

  • Proven experience as an HSE Lead or Senior HSE Manager on large construction projects
  • Data centre experience or experience on complex, high‑value technical projects (hyperscale, mission‑critical, industrial, energy) is strongly preferred
  • In‑depth knowledge of German HSE regulations and construction safety standards
  • Strong experience managing HSE across multiple contractors and subcontractors
  • Relevant HSE qualifications (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent European qualification)
  • Ability to operate effectively in a site‑based, fast‑track construction environment
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Fluent or professional working level English (German is a strong advantage)
  • Eligible to work in Germany (EU citizenship or valid right to work)

Working Pattern

  • Primarily site‑based in Berlin, with limited hybrid or remote flexibility depending on project phase
