HSE Manager – Data Centre Construction (12‑Month Contract)

About the Role
A client of ours is seeking an experienced HSE Manager to lead all Health, Safety, and Environmental activities on a major new‑build data centre project in Berlin. This role will begin in April involving a high‑specification construction environment with multiple contractors, complex MEP installation, and client compliance requirements.
The successful candidate will act as the site’s senior HSE, ensuring the project is delivered safely, responsibly, and in line with German legislation and client standards.
Key Responsibilities
HSE Leadership & Compliance
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the project HSE plan.
- Ensure full compliance with German HSE legislation, EU directives, and client‑specific safety protocols.
- Provide expert guidance to project leadership, subcontractors, and site teams.
Site Safety Management
- Conduct daily site inspections, audits, and risk assessments across civil, structural, and MEP work fronts.
- Identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and track close‑outs.
- Oversee permit‑to‑work systems, method statements, and safe systems of work.
Incident & Reporting
- Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and reporting to senior management.
- Maintain accurate documentation, safety metrics, and compliance records.
Training & Culture
- Deliver toolbox talks, inductions, and targeted safety training.
- Promote a proactive safety culture across all contractors and stakeholders.
- Coach supervisors and engineers to improve safety ownership and behaviors.
Stakeholder Coordination
- Liaise with client HSE teams, local authorities, and regulatory bodies.
- Coordinate with construction managers, package leads, and subcontractors to ensure alignment on safety expectations.
Experience
- Proven experience as an HSE Manager on construction projects (data centres, industrial, pharmaceutical, or high‑tech preferred).
- Basic understanding of German HSE regulations (ArbSchG, DGUV, BaustellV).
- Experience managing multi‑contractor environments and complex MEP installations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead investigations and drive safety improvements.
- Excellent communication skills in English; German language skills are a strong advantage.
