About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer to join a leading superyacht shipyard in Groningen. In this role, you will be responsible for developing detailed engineering designs for luxury superyachts, collaborating closely with naval architects, project managers, production teams, and external suppliers. You will play a crucial part in transforming conceptual yacht designs into fully engineered, buildable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Design
- Develop and refine 2D and 3D engineering models, layouts, and drawings for superyacht structures, systems, and outfitting.
- Translate conceptual naval architecture and design specifications into practical, production-ready engineering solutions.
- Ensure compliance with class society rules (Lloyd’s, DNV, ABS, etc.) and international maritime standards.
- Produce detailed technical documentation including material lists, construction drawings, and installation manuals.
Collaboration & Project Support
- Work closely with naval architects, mechanical engineers, interior designers, and production teams to ensure design feasibility and buildability.
- Provide technical support to the workshop during construction and outfitting phases.
- Collaborate with suppliers and subcontractors to integrate specialized systems, equipment, and custom components.
Quality & Innovation
- Participate in design reviews and optimization sessions to improve efficiency, performance, and luxury standards.
- Resolve engineering challenges with creative, practical solutions.
- Ensure accuracy, quality, and consistency across all engineering outputs.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related technical discipline.
- 2+ years of experience in yacht building, shipbuilding, maritime engineering, or luxury vessel design (superyacht experience is a strong advantage).
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, Siemens NX, SolidWorks, or ShipConstructor.
- Strong understanding of marine systems, structural design, or outfitting engineering.
- Ability to interpret and produce complex technical drawings and schematics.
- Knowledge of class regulations and maritime safety standards.
Soft Skills
- Strong problem-solving mindset with attention to detail.
- Good communication skills in English (Dutch is a plus but not required).
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Proactive, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
