We are supporting a data‑centre operator delivering mission‑critical infrastructure to meet the rapidly growing demand for cloud and AI capacity across Europe.
This opportunity focuses on leading and coordinating the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of a state‑of‑the‑art mission‑critical environment, overseeing all MEP systems and associated contractors on site.
Location: Austria (site‑based)
Contract: Freelance, 12‑month assignment (extensions likely)
Start Date: Immediate
Languages: English required; German advantageous
Eligibility: EU‑based freelancers or those with the right to work in Austria
Project Overview
Scope:
Leadership of mechanical, electrical, and MEP operations across a high‑performance data‑centre environment. This includes oversight of critical infrastructure, contractor coordination, risk management, and ensuring full compliance with technical, operational, and safety standards.
Environment:
Highly technical, fast‑paced mission‑critical facility with multi‑discipline engineering teams, external contractors, and senior stakeholder interaction.
Programme:
Long‑term development with continuity and the potential for multi‑year extensions.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of all critical MEP systems (UPS, generators, LV/HV distribution, cooling/HVAC, mechanical plant)
• Provide senior technical guidance on all MEP matters and act as the primary interface for engineering, operations, and contractor teams
• Oversee planned and reactive maintenance activities, method‑of‑work reviews, risk assessments, and change management procedures
• Coordinate and supervise specialist contractors and ensure high‑quality technical execution
• Drive continuous improvement in uptime, reliability, and energy efficiency
• Ensure strict compliance with health & safety frameworks, quality procedures, and operational governance
• Own incident response oversight, post‑event reporting, and technical root‑cause analysis
• Manage documentation, reporting, and communication with senior leadership and client representatives
Essential Skills / Experience
• Proven background as an MEP Lead, MEP Manager, Technical Manager, or Senior Engineer within mission‑critical environments (data centres, power generation, industrial plants, pharma, 24/7 facilities)
• Strong technical expertise across both mechanical and electrical systems
• Experience managing contractors, engineering teams, and multiple stakeholders on complex technical projects
• Deep understanding of critical infrastructure maintenance, operations, and risk management
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, operational procedures, and technical documentation
• Demonstrated capability in incident management and root‑cause analysis
• Excellent communication, leadership, and coordination skills
• Fluent in English; German is a plus
