Project Engineer - Saxony, Germany - Automation for Substations - Competitive Salary & Bonus Scheme

One of our clients are currently looking for a Project Engineer to join their permanent team. The roles involves configuration, and delivery of automation and control systems for high‑voltage substations (110 kV – 400 kV). You will support projects through the full lifecycle—from engineering and programming to testing and commissioning—ensuring reliable, secure, and compliant substation automation solutions.

 

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

  • Develop automation and control system concepts for HV/MV substations (IEC 61850, protection interfaces, SCADA integration).
  • Prepare technical specifications, design documents, I/O lists, and functional descriptions.
  • Design communication architectures (GOOSE, MMS, redundancy concepts, routing, cyber security considerations).
  • Coordinate with electrical design teams, protection engineers, and project managers.

Programming & Configuration

  • Configure and program substation automation systems (SAS), PLCs, RTUs, and HMIs.
  • Implement communication protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 60870‑5‑104, Modbus TCP).
  • Develop and test logic sequences, interlocks, and alarm structures.

Testing & Commissioning

  • Perform factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).
  • Support on‑site commissioning, parameterization, and integration of control and protection equipment.
  • Troubleshoot automation and communication issues during energization and handover.

Project Coordination

  • Act as the technical interface between clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with project scope, technical standards (VDE, IEC), and safety requirements.
  • Prepare documentation, test reports, and as‑built files.

Key Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Control Engineering, or similar.
  • Experience in substation automation, SCADA, or industrial control systems (preferably in HV/MV grid environments).

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 engineering (System Configuration Language/SCL, IED configuration).
  • Experience with PLC/RTU programming (Siemens, ABB, Schneider, Honeywell, etc.).
  • Understanding of protection systems, signal interfaces, and grid communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with VDE, EN, and IEC standards for substations and control systems.
