Project Manager – Utility-Scale BESS (Greater Hamburg Area, Germany)

Contract: Freelance | 2–3 Year Engagement

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of a 100MW utility-scale Battery Energy Storage (BESS) project in the Greater Hamburg area.

This is a long-term contract role offering involvement from early mobilisation through to full construction and commissioning.

Contract Overview

  • Duration: 24–36 months
  • Start: June–September (mobilisation phase)
  • From September onwards: Full delivery / site-focused phase
  • Working Model:
  • Predominantly remote during early stages
  • Increased site presence during construction
  • Company car available

Key Responsibilities

  • End-to-end project management of a 100MW utility-scale BESS project
  • Coordination across planning, permitting, and construction phases
  • Primary interface with local authorities and regulatory bodies (German language essential)
  • Management of EPC contractors, consultants, and site activities
  • Oversight of programme, cost, quality, and HSE performance
  • Production and management of structured, high-quality project documentation
  • Close collaboration with Country Management and key stakeholders

Required Experience

  • Proven delivery experience on utility-scale BESS projects (essential)
  • PV + BESS hybrid experience advantageous
  • Electrical engineering background (degree or equivalent experience)
  • Strong understanding of:
  • German planning and permitting processes
  • Grid connection and regulatory requirements
  • Construction interfaces and contractor coordination
  • Fluent German (spoken and written)
  • Strong commercial awareness and reporting capability

  • Comfortable leading complex infrastructure projects independently
  • Structured, pragmatic, and delivery-focused
  • Commercially aware with strong stakeholder management skills
  • Confident operating in lean, fast-moving project environments

Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
