Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer – Oil Refinery Project (Freelance / Contract)
Location: Hamburg, Germany

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer for a major oil refinery project based in Hamburg, Germany. This is a long-term contract opportunity on a large-scale industrial energy project, offering an immediate start for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute mechanical commissioning activities across refinery systems and equipment
- Manage commissioning phases including pre-commissioning, mechanical completion, testing, start-up, and performance verification
- Support commissioning activities for rotating equipment, piping systems, pumps, compressors, valves, and associated mechanical systems
- Coordinate commissioning activities with construction, electrical, instrumentation, and operations teams
- Supervise on-site commissioning technicians, subcontractors, and vendors
- Ensure all systems are commissioned in accordance with project specifications, safety procedures, and industry standards
- Review commissioning documentation, procedures, punch lists, and test records
- Interface closely with OEM vendors, client representatives, and project stakeholders throughout commissioning and start-up phases
- Identify and resolve technical issues during commissioning and plant start-up activities
- Ensure strict compliance with HSE regulations and refinery commissioning procedures
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical commissioning within oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical, power generation, or heavy industrial environments
- Proven experience as a Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer or similar role
- Strong background in mechanical systems including rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, piping, and static equipment
- Experience with refinery processes, hydrocarbons, utilities systems, or process plants is highly desirable
- Familiarity with commissioning procedures, testing protocols, and plant start-up operations
- Ability to manage commissioning activities independently within a fast-paced site environment
- Strong understanding of mechanical completion, punch management, and system handover processes
- Willingness to work on-site in Hamburg, Germany
- Fluent English AND German language skills are advantageous
- Eligible to work in the EU on a freelance/contract basis
