Senior Mechanical Design Manager – Data Centres (Contract)

  • Client HQ London - Open to candidates based in EU countries.
  • Initial 6‑month engagement
  • Freelance / Contract. Permanent candidates can also be considered.

An established client‑side data centre developer is appointing a Senior Mechanical Design Manager to support a portfolio of large‑scale developments during the pre‑construction and tender stages.

This is a senior contract role suited to an experienced mechanical design professional with strong data centre credentials and the confidence to lead external consultants in a fast‑paced delivery environment.

 

Role Overview

You will take ownership of mechanical design coordination through early design, planning and tender, ensuring solutions are compliant, buildable, commercially optimised and aligned to client requirements.

Working alongside commercial, construction and investment teams, you’ll manage design risk and ensure technical strategies support procurement and programme objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate mechanical design consultants through pre‑construction stages
  • Manage mechanical design development for planning and tender submissions
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations and authority requirements
  • Identify and mitigate design and permitting risks
  • Support tender documentation, RFPs and cost strategies
  • Contribute to value engineering and constructability reviews
  • Act as the primary mechanical design interface for internal and external stakeholders
  • Support the development of scalable, repeatable mechanical design solutions

 

Experience Required

Essential

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Extensive experience in mechanical design for data centre projects
  • Strong background in pre‑construction and planning‑led design
  • Proven ability to manage multiple consultants and workstreams
  • Confident communicator with client‑side exposure
  • Strong commercial and programme awareness

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Client‑side or developer experience
  • Hyperscale or large‑format data centre project exposure

Junior Management Programme:
Ran by our head of L&D this programme is designed to support junior managers as they start their management career. This involves things like personal branding, time management and ends in a business plan which is presented to members of the Exec board and senior management team.
