Job Specification: Structural Engineer – Cable Construction (m/f/d)
Location: Memmingen, Germany
Specialism: Steel Cable Construction / Large Roof Structures
Contract: Freelance
About the Role:
We are seeking a Structural Engineer with specialist experience in steel cable construction to support the design and delivery of major long‑span architectural structures. This role focuses on tensioned cable systems, typically applied in stadium roofs, large rail/transport terminals, exhibition halls, and lightweight steel structures.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary design team and take ownership of cable-supported structural solutions from concept through detailed design.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and analyse steel cable systems, including tension forces, pretensioning, sag behaviour, anchorage, and dynamic load effects.
- Develop long‑span roof structures using cable trusses, tension rings, hangers, and supporting steelwork.
- Produce 3D models, fabrication details, and coordination drawings using Inventor and Revit.
- Work closely with architects, structural designers, and fabrication/installation teams to ensure technical accuracy.
- Perform structural calculations for cable elements, connectors, sockets, clamps, and interfaces.
- Support site teams with installation procedures, tensioning sequences, and technical clarifications.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Eurocodes and project-specific design standards.
- Contribute to optimisation studies, value engineering, and feasibility assessments for complex roof geometries.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Degree in Structural, Civil, Mechanical, or Architectural Engineering.
- Proven experience in steel cable construction, tensile structures, or long-span roof engineering.
- Strong understanding of:
- Cable behaviour (tension-only systems)
- Non-linear analysis
- Dynamic and wind load effects
- Steel and connection design
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor (detailed steel/cable component modelling) and Revit (BIM coordination).
- Experience working on large architectural or infrastructure structures such as stadiums, terminals, or façade systems.
- Ability to manage complex geometries and interface with multiple design disciplines.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience with membrane structures or tensile façade systems.
- Knowledge of analysis tools (e.g., Robot, RFEM, SOFiSTiK, or similar).
- German or English fluency (both an advantage).
- Background supporting installation or on‑site construction phases.
What We Offer:
- Opportunity to work on landmark engineering projects with complex architectural forms.
- Stable and established engineering environment with long-term project pipelines.
- Modern software ecosystem & high-level engineering tooling.
- Professional development and progression pathways.
